The Students’ Union needs a new chair-
person. Millie and Kitty are talking about
the most suitable person for the post. Let’s
listen to the tape and answer the following
questions:
* Who does Millie think would be a good
      chairperson?

* Why does she think so?
Sandy.
Because she is very imaginative.
7
Please read after the tape and try to remember the dialogue. Later I’ll ask you to make up your own dialogues, using Millie and Kitty’s as a model.
8
However, other students don’t agree with her. You are one of them. You need to express your own ideas. You can recommend Suzy or David. Remember:give your reasons.
Make up your own dialogues in pairs.
9
Who else would be more suitable?
This time, you can recommend anybody you know. Maybe he or she is one of your classmates.
Just remember: give us enough reasons.

Do you know the differences between a formal recommendation letter and an informal letter to a close friend?

13
Can you find out the typical formal expressions in this letter?
14
    Dear Professor
I am very happy to recommend an excellent student, Alice Green, to your MBA courses.
During her four years at our university, she attended my classes in Astronomy (天文学). Alice’s strong points include an ability to do several jobs at the same time and produce high quality results. As part of a project, she had developed a software (软件) model of the Leo galaxy (星系).
A formal recommendation letter:
15
And at that time, she was the chairperson of the Students’ Union. But the heavy work did not affect (影响) her studies. If your MBA program looks for clever students with strong abilities, Alice is a good choice.
Finally, let me state my strong recommendation for Alice Green. If you have any question or need more information, I will be happy to talk to you. Please feel free to contact me.
    Sincerely yours
    Michael Brown
